“If you don’t know what it’s trying to do, you’re never gonna accomplish it.”

Know Your Podcast’s Purpose or Fail Fast

The Foundation of Every Great Podcast

It’s a thousand times worth repeating: if you don’t know what problem your podcast is solving, or what you want your podcast to do, you’re setting yourself up for a mediocre show at best. This isn’t just theory — it’s the core of Paul’s Law #1: “Know what you want your podcast to do before you record your first second.”

Purpose Can Be Simple or Complex

Your podcast’s purpose might be as straightforward as entertaining someone during their 20-minute commute. Or it might be more strategic — like selling your product, promoting your services, or establishing your reputation as a subject matter expert. Whatever it is, clarity on this purpose is non-negotiable.

Test, Track, and Tweak

Here’s the best part: once you know what your podcast is supposed to do, you can start testing, tracking, and monitoring to see if it’s actually working. Don’t assume your audience automatically “gets it.” You have to measure impact. Are you moving the needle? If yes, keep doing what’s working. If not, stop, change, fix, and iterate. You absolutely can do this.

  • Define your podcast’s core goal clearly.
  • Track listener engagement and feedback.
  • Measure if your podcast is driving the results you want.
  • Adjust your content and approach based on real data.
Why This Matters

Without a clear purpose, your podcast is just noise. With purpose, it becomes a powerful tool that serves your audience and your goals. This is the difference between a show that fizzles out and one that builds lasting impact.
